Photogrammetry from video: tips for a good 3D scan

In short: Photogrammetry rebuilds a 3D model from many overlapping images of an object, and a video gives those images automatically. A good scan comes from a matte, textured object in soft even light, filmed slowly in a full circle so every side is seen from several angles.

How video photogrammetry works

The software takes frames from your video, finds the same surface points in many of them, works out where the camera was for each frame, and from that builds a mesh and a texture. Anything that confuses point matching (reflections, transparency, plain single-color surfaces, motion) makes the result worse.

Recording checklist

  • Light: soft and even, like a bright overcast day or a room with diffuse light. Avoid hard shadows and flash.
  • Background: plain and different from the object, with some texture on the surface it stands on.
  • Movement: walk slowly in a full circle, then a second circle from higher up looking down. Do not move the object.
  • Distance: keep the object filling most of the frame without cutting it off.
  • Length: about 30 seconds to 2 minutes is usually enough. Up to 5 minutes is accepted.
  • Focus and blur: hold the phone steady; sharp frames matter more than many frames.

What scans well and what does not

Scans wellScans badly
Shoes, bags, sculptures, plants, foodGlass, mirrors, chrome, glossy plastic
Wood, stone, fabric, ceramicsPlain white or black objects with no texture
Objects that stay stillHair, fur, very thin parts like wires

Scale

A video has no real scale, so the size of the model is a guess unless you give it one. On jpgtousdz you enter the real height of the object in centimeters and the model is scaled to it, so it appears at true size in AR.

If a scan fails

On jpgtousdz a failed video conversion is not charged; your credit comes back automatically. Try again with softer light, slower movement and a more textured surface under the object.

Try it now

Turn a photo into a real-size USDZ and GLB in a few seconds, or a video into a 3D model. Your first photo conversion is free.

FAQ

Do I need a LiDAR iPhone?

No. Video photogrammetry works with any phone camera. LiDAR helps some scanning apps but is not needed here.

How long does processing take?

Video jobs run in a queue on Apple Silicon machines. Usually minutes; the page shows your place in the queue.

What do I get?

A textured 3D model as USDZ and GLB, scaled to the height you entered, plus an AR viewer link.
